At Fahrenheit 32 - on the cusp of stasis - opaline snow, slowly, still, steadily recedes to reveal the forlorn landscape as it has and will for millennia past and future. And though winter is a stubborn old man, she breaks his frozen fingers to thaw her earth by day only to let him reclaim his icy grip upon her orb overnight wreaking havoc on the vulnerable infrastructure of this venerable railroad forever known as the “CW” (Central Washington Railroad). At MP82, just a few jointed-rail-sticks west of the ghost town of Govan (elevator in the right background), Engineer Jerry Miller helms Eastern Washington Gateway’s HM02-2 as it undulates the contour of the steppe-like topography, like the sun, rising and descending ad infinitum the train begins its increasing to 1% corniche drop into Rattlesnake Gulch along Jarchow and Bender Lake, crossing Childers and Corbett Draw all the while dwindling the few miles to the next hamlet of Almira at a comfortable twenty some-odd miles per turn of the hand with thirty-in-tow “mtys” destined for the waiting grain spouts and the hardy men that man them twenty-four more miles down-the-line at end-of-the-line Coulee City where Jerry and his Conductor F. M. Simon, calling it a day’s work, will tie down and tie up. The sun was dropping quietly quite quickly as we contemplated what angle might produce the desired effect, i.e., the sweetness of glint. It was not to be. She beat us, and our actor was late in arriving. An empty, dime-a-dozen grainer. Hung up at Ritzville, not yet lined further as heaven’s all-seeing eye was leaving our composition and closing in on the horizon as swiftly as we re-composed hoping we could still capitalize on what the scene had left to offer. Spitting a few teeth-chattering expletives into the brisk wind our intel reveals the earthworm is at Essig (Vinegar in German, no doubt an archaic family name) and then at West Tokio some four miles away, still! With no possibility of glint-action, we re-position and stage traverse BNSF's high-density Spokane-Pasco main where trains jump from one siding to the next between long segments of double track to make way for prioritized traffic. Alas, in the not-too-far distance a headlight – just like the many thousands I’ve seen and waited for in my half-century – appears. Bending a rising, long-sweeping curve just beyond the defunct corrugated elevator, the stretch of rolling steel bombs down a slight decline as we record its progress: packing up even before the head-end thunders by at track-speed though this iron road conveyor belt is already signaled into the next hole for one of numerous meets on its trek towards Spokane. And, while it wasn’t what we had envisioned, the capture produced the handsome result nonetheless: I think! Introduced on New Year’s Day of 1972, the technology is a testament to its superb design by the fact that surviving examples are fetching more now then they did when new! And looky here, this Dash-2 card is still doing its job though what it’s indicating is rather undesirable. Railroaders have been at war with the elements for generations, hence there is nothing extraordinary about this scene. Yet, it is a glimpse into one such campaign in that perpetual conflict between man; his machines; his – a la Nietzsche – indomitable Will to Power and what is Force Majeure. To-wit: the crew confronts myriad complications: frozen switch locks; compacted, snowed in switches and “throwing” them means throwing your back – all your living and dead might – into bending frozen steel to one’s will; bad, if not non-existent footing; air hoses and the air that passes through them frozen, unbendable and impassable; not to mention the overarching mental and physical fatigue all while ensuring that each move is orchestrated according to a detailed, sequential plan: switches lined, handbrakes set, derails dropped, cars properly spotted, working in between unaired cars and 200-plus-ton locomotives. These men; this Band of Brothers, they have each other’s six every-single-step of the way for any lapse or deviation from said maneuver or miscommunication is consequential. The demand for unflagging concentration is nothing short of supreme as the wind mercilessly knifes its icy blades into any exposed skin and through as many layers of clothing, and any romantic notion of railroading leaves you as quickly as the boreal vacuum sucks the warmth from your body. Out here there’s nothing but the glassy onyx of darkness deep and more of it, and none of it, sound, that is but for the high-tension current shooting through the overhead powerlines in distinctive Mains hum. Until we appear, shattering solitude and pushing aside the black dress of night with our long steel train searing, searching, emanating that quaint, comingled whining, throbbing roar of mated EMD 16-645 motors and our crew rig kicking Sherman’s rocks. It’s damned cold as unlit coal but the stars, like little diamonds, twinkle in the night sky partially obscured by an invisible to the camera mist hovering over the moist, freshly seeded earth, her fertile scent so primal to my being and existence. I take note as I breathe her in deeply on the night before Halloween, and what appears to be an apparition I unwittingly captured is a translucent selfie. Unable to stay warm, I collect my gear and head to the rig where Conductor Rohrig has it toasty when the crest of the Draw begins to light up. Our relief has arrived. After the usual shop talk and exchange of work order details and condition of power and train, our relief takes the train further into the twinkling cavern, we, depart home as all trace of man-made sound and light retreats save the Mains hum from the wires.
